The Women and Gender Research Institute (WGRI)
was formed in 1984 to foster research by women, to assist departments in recruiting
and retaining women faculty, and to encourage research on gender issues by
men and women.
Our goal of involving women in research reflects the University's
land-grant commitment to egalitarian education. Nationally as well as
locally, women tend to be academically isolated and underrepresented in
certain disciplines. Involvement in a research community means political
and intellectual empowerment for many women.
Funding for WGRI is provided by the
Vice President for Research and the Provost's offices.
The need to promote research on gender issues derives from a growing
awareness of gender roles in our society. Through the Women and Gender
Research Institute, the University contributes to an increasing
understanding of men's and women's roles and contributions to society.
We are part of the USU Tri-Council for Gender Programs, along with the Women's
and Gender Studies Program and the Women's
Center.
We welcome contributions to support and expand WGRI
programs. Please direct inquiries about WGRI
