RESEARCH/SCHOLARLY INTERESTS : Socialization of young infants in
gender specific ways; adjustment of young children from single parent
(usually mother) poverty-level homes to family home day care and center day
care; recruitment and retention of women students in the College of Family
Life, especially after marriage.
SERVICE : Direct several projects designed
to promote the quality of child care in day care homes through provider
training and professionalism activities. Most (98%) of these providers are
women who, heretofore, have been isolated in their home child care
businesses. The projects bring the providers together for training and for socialization.
From these activities providers have reported (and we have measured) a
marked increase in providers' professional self-esteem and sense of overall
professional worth. Project in Paraguay designed to encourage Mother's
literacy while they learn about ways to promote their children's school
readiness. Project in Box Elder County designed to promote leadership among
Mexican American boys and girls.

deficits in the elderly including differences in the prevalence/incidence
of Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias as well as the interaction
between dementia risk factors and gender. A recent area of exploration has
been the use of estrogen replacement therapy to aid cognition in the
elderly. Some evidence suggests that it may decrease risk of Alzheimer's
Disease.
