THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY in the College of Science at Utah State University offers a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an emphasis on sedimentary systems, low temperature geochemistry, or petroleum geology. The Geology Department has outreach programs within the Utah State University system, as well as partnerships with other Utah colleges and universities. As part of USU's mission to make its academic programs accessible throughout the state, this position will be physically located at USU-Uintah Basin Regional Campus in northeastern Utah.
This is a 9-month, tenure-track position. The initial appointment will be approximately 70% teaching, 25 % research, and 5% service, but may be adjusted in the future to meet changing needs of the Geology Department and the Uintah Basin Regional Campus.
Responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department's degree programs. Normal course assignments will include Physical Geology, plus additional courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Many courses are taught in the evenings, and some courses will be offered via Interactive Broadcast to USU Regional Campuses and Centers as well as USU Partnership Campuses. Student advising, supervision of senior theses, and service on graduate committees are additional responsibilities. Research activity within the Uintah Basin region is encouraged.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in the geosciences, evidence of ability to conduct and disseminate geology research, and strong communication skills. Preferred qualification include a record of outstanding teaching and research experience as well as the ability to develop a research program focused on the Uintah Basin's sedimentary systems, emphasizing petroleum geology or low-temperature geochemistry.
The Department of Geology
The Department of Geology at Utah State University prepares students for professional careers in the geosciences and provides the background required for advanced studies. The department offers BS and MS degrees in Geology and Applied Environmental Geosciences and a PhD in Geology. Both BS programs meet the curriculum standards established by the American Institute of Professional Geologists. The department also offers the Earth Science Composite Teaching Major in to prepare teachers of earth science at the secondary school level. Requirements for the composite earth science major meet or exceed the standards of the National Science Teachers Association.
Utah State University is a Research I (Extensive Doctoral) land-grant institution with a student body of over 24,000. With 42 departments, 7 academic colleges, a school of Graduate Studies, and diverse research programs. The main USU campus is located in the city of Logan, 85 miles north of Salt Lake City, and is surrounded by the Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. Regional campuses are located in Brigham City, Tooele and the Uintah Basin, with partnership programs on the campuses of Snow College and the College of Eastern Utah.
This position will be physically located at USU-Uintah Basin, the largest and fastest-growing Regional Campus in the USU statewide system. Located in the northeast Utah, with classrooms and faculty in both Roosevelt and Vernal, this campus has enjoyed a tripling of student enrollment in recent years. Thanks to major donations from the community and ongoing legislative support, work has begun on two new campus buildings. The Uintah Basin is a region of spectacular scenic beauty, with recreational access to the Uinta mountains, Flaming Gorge, and the Green River.
With the support of the Utah Legislature, USU has been provided resources to support the delivery of baccalaureate and graduate programs in cooperation with Snow College and the College of Eastern Utah. These USU degree programs, taught by USU faculty, are being planned and articulated so that students from partner institutions can seamlessly move from their associate programs directly into baccalaureate programs delivered in those locales. It is an innovative, collaborate partnership between the state's land grant universities and its sister institutions in the Utah System of Higher Education.
