Please contact the Geology
Department if you are interested in our
graduate program. Your name and address will be given to the
appropriate faculty member(s) to reply. You are encouraged
to correspond directly with these faculty. In addition, faculty
may contact applicants directly, especially if there is other
financial support available, such as research assistantships.
You should be aware that evaluation of applicants for our graduate
program is based on GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation,
area of research interest, and other criteria. To be considered
for admission into the MS Program with matriculated status, your GPA should be
approximately 3.0 (A=4.0) and for the GRE, your scores should
be no less than the 40th percentile. For admission into the PhD Program, your GPA should be approximately 3.4 (A-4.0) and for the GRE, your scores should be no less than 50th percentile.
Departmental financial support for incoming students consists
primarily of graduate teaching assistantships. These positions
pay at a competitive rate for a 9-month appointment and tuition
is assessed at the in-state rate. All applicants are automatically
considered for these assistantships and awards are usually
made in March or early April for the following academic year.
Your university application, GRE scores, transcript, and letters
of recommendation must be on file no later than February 15
to be considered for an assistantship. This means planning
well in advance to take the Graduate Record Exam.
The School of Graduate Studies will charge an application
fee of $40. Before going to the expense of formally applying,
please send unofficial copies of your transcript and GRE scores,
and a statement of possible research interests, and the Graduate
Advisor will give you a preliminary
assessment of possible admission. In addition, outstanding
students will be asked to apply for the Eccles Fellowship which
pays $18,000 per year for 3 years.
Applications are submitted online, contact the School
of Graduate Studies. |
