John W. Shervais

My research focuses on the origin and evolution of basic and intermediate magma systems. Projects include

  1. (1)magmatic processes in the upper mantle, with emphasis on “subduction factory” processes that effect the mantle wedge,

  2. (2)magmatic processes along ancient plate margins, including on the Jurassic Coast Range ophiolite of California, the Neoproterozoic Carolina arc terrane, and Archean/ Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Wasatch Mountains, and

  3. (3)plume-related intraplate volcanism, focusing on continental basalts of the Snake River volcanic province.

  4. This work has been supported by NSF, NASA, USGS, DOE, and the International Continental Drilling Program.
