- Create a new ID and pin number
- Whether you've attended USU before or not, you need to create a new ID and pin number by clicking the "First time user account creation" link under the "Login" button on the Admissions Login page. Keep a record of your ID and password for future returns to the site.
- Choose the "School of Graduate Studies" application and fill it out
- Choose "School of Graduate Studies" from the drop down menu. The application has 12 short sections, and you can save your partially completed application at any time and continue filling it out later by logging in with your ID and pin number. The online application has an area called "additional information" where you are required to enter a "statement of purpose." If your intended department requires an additional statement or resume, please send it directly to the department, as the School of Graduate Studies does not require additional documents.
- Submit the application
- You can submit your application even if you haven't completed a graduate admissions test (such as the GRE, GMAT, or MAT) or sent your transcripts. However, your application will not be processed until all documents have been received.
Pay $55 application fee
- Pay the application fee (current USU honors students, click here to have the fee waived)
- Pay the application fee (current USU honors students, click here to have the fee waived) After the application is completed, you'll go to a secure page where you are required to pay the $55 application fee. You can pay with a VISA, MasterCard, or Discover card. Your application will not be submitted until this fee is paid.
Take the test: GRE, GMAT or MAT, MILLERS
- Register to take an admissions test
- To register for a test, go to www.ets.org, or visit the School of Graduate Studies, or call USU Testing Services at (435) 797-1004.
- Get a qualifying score
- A score at or above the 40th percentile on the appropriate admissions test is required. Some departments require a higher score.
- Have your score sent
- Test scores must be sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies by the testing agency. The institutional code for Utah State University is 4857. The scores must be received before an application is considered complete.
Provide a copy of your transcript
- Have your official transcripts sent
- An official transcript must be ordered from each previously attended college and/or university (except USU) and must be sent directly from each institution to USU's School of Graduate Studies (0900 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322-0900). Transcripts must be submitted for all courses above the high school level and for all prior degrees.
Transcripts accumulated on one record are not acceptable. Transcripts submitted as application credentials become the property of the School of Graduate Studies and will not be returned to the applicant.

Provide three contacts for letters of recommendation
- Know names and e-mail addresses for 3 recommenders
- The names and e-mail addresses of your recommenders are required on the application. Once the application is submitted, the School of Graduate Studies will notify your recommenders and ask them to send their letters electronically. Recommendation letters will not be reviewed unless they are submitted this way.
Each letter must address the applicant's potential for success in the proposed graduate degree program. If you have been enrolled in school during the last 5 years, at least 2 of the letters must come from people who are familiar with you and can make an authoritative assessment of your recent academic progress and success.

Once the application is submitted, the School of Graduate Studies will notify your recommenders and ask them to send their letters electronically. Recommendation letters will not be reviewed unless they are submitted this way.
*International students
International students should take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and have the score sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies by the testing service.
