The School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship

Click Here to download the Application

The School of Graduate Studies is continuing with the tradition of providing funding opportunities for doctoral students expecting to write their dissertations during the 2008-2009 Academic Year. The application deadline for the School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowships is 1 April 2008.

Purpose of Dissertation Fellowship

The School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship is intended to provide outstanding doctoral students with additional time to draft and to revise their dissertations. For many doctoral students, the need to teach or to serve as a research assistant interferes with their ability to complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. This fellowship aims to help doctoral students move more efficiently and quickly toward the completion of their dissertations.

Because the fellowship should be used to relieve students from some part of their teaching or research obligations in order to pursue more actively the actual writing of the dissertation, departments will be asked to provide short statements describing such an arrangement. When the student is awarded a fellowship, the department also will be asked to provide an Employment Action Form or its equivalent indicating a reduced FTE for the student.

Amount and Duration

The amount of a School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship is $5,000. The fellowship is non-renewable. An undetermined number of fellowships will be awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.

Application and Selection Procedures

In order to be considered for the Dissertation Fellowship, a student must submit (1) an application (attached), (2) curriculum vita, (3) a letter from the department head or the department's director of graduate studies that endorses the student's application and that describes the department's commitment to relieve the student of some portion of the student's responsibilities as a graduate assistant. The letter should be addressed to the Dissertation Fellowship Selection Committee.

All applications for the School of Graduate Studies Dissertation Fellowship will be evaluated and ranked by a subcommittee of the Graduate Council. This subcommittee will forward candidate names to the Graduate Dean.
