How to Establish Utah Residency for Tuition Purposes
Utah State Law
Residency Requirements are defined by 2002 House Bill 331 - Nonresident Tuition for Higher Education Effective May 6, 2002 and the Utah State Board of Regents policy R512.
Please Note: Other requirements may apply. For further residency questions please contact the USU Residency Office at (435) 797-8144 or visit them in person at TSC Room 102.
The Basics
- Applicant must be a US Citizen or have Permanent Resident Status.
- Applicant must live in Utah for 24 continuous months prior to beginning school in Utah OR live in Utah while completing a minimum total of 60 semester credit hours at a regionally accredited institution of higher education in Utah. It is important to note that graduate students who are seeking residency may count any credits at the 5000 level and above 1.5 times the actual credit. For example, if you take a 3 credit, 5000 level class, it would count for 4.5 credits towards your residency requirements only (not your graduation requirements).
- Applicant must have a Utah Driver's License and Utah Vehicle Registration. (If you own a car OR if you are borrowing a car and have it here for your regular use, it must be registered in Utah.)
- Each person who applies for Utah resident status for tuition purposes is considered on an individual basis.
- Utah semester credits should not be broken by attendance at another school of higher education outside of the State of Utah (i.e., do not attend summer classes in your home state)
