Profile Christopher Conte, an African specialist, holds a bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in history, two master's degrees from Ohio University in African area studies and applied linguistics, and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in African history with subfields in geography and Middle Eastern history. His articles and book reviews have appeared in such journals as Environmental History, American Historical Review, Land Degradation and Development, and The Journal of African History. The recipient of research grants from the American Philosophical Society, Utah State University, Michigan State University, and Fulbright's International Institute for Education, he has recently published a book entitled Highland Sanctuary: Environmental History in Tanzania's Usambara Mountains. Dr. Conte is the History Department's Director of Graduate Studies. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Environment and Society in the College of Natural Resources and works closely with graduate students in both programs. On the undergraduate level he teaches courses in African, environmental, and world history. |
