Profile Edward Glatfelter's twin interests are aptly reflected in the title of the doctoral dissertation he wrote at Indiana University: "Russia in China: Russian Reaction to the Boxer Rebellion." Throughout his career, Dr. Glatfelter has focused on these two massive and diverse, border-sharing nations. His interests required him to learn two challenging languages. Long fluent in Russian, he recently collaborated with Wang Zhicheng of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on a book about the Portuguese in Shanghai and he is in the midst of completing a translation of Wang's work, The History of the Russian Emigre Community in Shanghai. Dr. Glatfelter is also the author of a number of articles and encyclopedia entries. Using the latest in computer technology, he teaches courses in Comparative Asian History, Chinese History, and the Soviet Union and Its Successors. Despite his zeal for teaching and scholarship, for much of his time at USU, Dr. Glatfelter has served in administrative positions. Beginning in 1984, he headed the Department of History for a decade before becoming an associate dean in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Still, it is difficult to pin Dr. Glatfelter down in Old Main. He goes abroad whenever possible either as USU's emissary to East Asia or as dean of the University of Pittsburgh's renowned Semester at Sea. |
