WHQ Fellowships
Financial assistance is available to graduate students in History through the Western Historical Quarterly, published quarterly at USU. The editors of the journal offer, in alternating years, the S. George Ellsworth Editorial Fellowship and the Robert M. Utley Editorial Fellowship. Nationally competitive, these fellowships are awarded to a highly qualified students who work as editorial assistants in the WHQ office where they are acquainted with all aspects of journal production. Given a stipend of $14,000 (including summer work), a waiver of the out-of-state portion of the tuition, and medical insurance, fellowship holders must enroll in USU's master's program in History and work 20 hours a week in the WHQ helping to select, prepare, and copy edit manuscripts. These fellowships may be retained for a second year, depending upon satisfactory progress toward the master's degree and acceptable completion of editorial assignments. Additional funding is available if the fellow can begin work at the beginning of August. Applicants should send a letter of application and three letters of recommendation to the WHQ (see address below), along with their application to the School of Graduate Studies at USU. Materials must be postmarked no later than 1 February. Applicants will be notified in early April.
Funding for the S. George Ellsworth Fellowship is provided by the Western Historical Quarterly, the School of Graduate Studies, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the S. George Ellsworth Endowment of the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies. Funding for the Robert M. Utley Fellowship is provided by the Western Historical Quarterly and the School of Graduate Studies. Recent recipients of the editorial fellowships include students from Amherst, Duke, Yale, Dartmouth, the College of William and Mary, Evergreen State, Calvin College, Colorado College, and the University of Wisconsin.
