A continual cycle of planning and assessment is necessary to ensure the IELI program is achieving its mission. That mission, in part, is to teach the language and cultural skills international students and non-English speaking U.S. residents need for successful academic study at USU.

Questions we must ask ourselves constantly include these:

  • Are we accurately assessing the abilities of new students when we place them into our classes?
  • Are our students really ready when we move them from one level of classes to a higher level? Are they prepared for undergraduate or graduate study when they finish IELI?

  • How can we improve our curriculum? Does it reflect up-to-date research in second language acquisition? Does it show we value quality teaching and learning?
