Meet the Staff
Doug Ede Engineering Coordinator
Doug is the most supportive engineer in the department. He is Doug "don't mess with me today" Ederesponsible for supporting the distance Learning System, Production, FACT Center, on-campus media classrooms, Athletics, and Conferences for other departments on campus. Doug is also responsible for designing classrooms, facility maintenance and programing touch screens for the media enhanced classrooms. Doug has spent 20 years in the broadcast industry, 10 of those years at Utah State.

Chris Ellet
Video Network Specialist
Chris is the newest member of the Technical Operations Center. He is Chris "fore!" Elletresponsible for up-linking classes to the appropriate satellite, taking trouble calls from sites and help them through any problems they may have. Chris worked as announcer/producer for Utah Public Radio for eight years and has his B.S. in Broadcast Journalism.

Leo Huber
Satellite Engineer
Leo is our resident RF transmission and satellite expert. He spends his time keeping the Leo Hubersatellite system up and running. Often this means coming in on weekends and evenings to fix problems. He also assembles and installs ITSE's satellite dishes. Leo is the man to contact for all Digital satellite uplink problems and Analog satellite uplink and downlink problems. Leo has worked as a broadcast engineer since 1965 for many different organizations, KTVX-TV, KUED, KSL, KUTV and Bonneville Telecommunications were lucky enough to have employed Leo for many years.

Rick Hughes
Chief Engineer

Rick manages ITSE and supervises a technical staff of 10 Rick Hughes employees, approves projects, assigns tasks, and monitors progress. Rick works directly with the Dean's Office and campus users in determining equipment needs and priorities. Rick also tries to keep our budget in line by planning equipment purchases and making cost-effective use of state resources.

Rick provides technical consultation to University faculty and staff and works with planners to incorporate technology in architectural designs and assists in the design of electronic classrooms and telecommunications facilities. Rick has worked with Campus Planning, Physical Plant and others in the development of new electronic classrooms. There have been 25 electronic classrooms constructed to date.

Rick is the Project Leader for technical development of the Utah Education Network's Digital Satellite System. He collaborates with the State of Utah and the Utah Education Network and oversees development of RFP Documents, system design, and implementation for the digital satellite network. Rick has worked for our department for ten years and has worked in the Broadcast and Telecommunications Industries for 30 years. He received an AS degree from Ricks college and a BS in electrical engineering from USU. He also holds one US and International Patent

Rick is the technical contact person for all campus electronic delivery technologies and classroom electronic mediation.

Rick's technical skills include a technical understanding of CATV telecommunications and satellite networks. He is skilled in the art of RF, analog and digital electronics design; programming languages: PASCAL, Borland C++ and C-Builder, INTEL x86 and Motorola 68000 Assembly (HC11 Embedded Assembly); software applications: WordPerfect Office, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, GroupWise, Adobe Photoshop, Netscape, AutoCAD, PSPICE.

Dan Metcalf
Video Network Specialist

Dan is responsible for connecting and monitoring distance education Dan  Metcalf classes for both USU and EDNET. He also provides support for live and taped productions. Dan also assists with the Distance Education help line. He is skilled in video production and often assists behind the camera.

Dan received his BA in mass communication from the University of Utah in 1992 and has 10 years of experience in TV production. Along with his work for ITSE, Dan does a lot of free-lance video production for local and national TV organizations.

Don Newman
Video Engineer

Don is the secretive member of the staff. We are not sure what he Don Newmandoes, but it involves spending a lot of time in the campus wiring tunnels.

Debbie Wagner
ITSE Office Coordinator

Debbie came aboard ITSE at the Quonset in June of 2000 as the Office Coordinator. Debbie Wagner

Previously, after being a full-time housewife for 17 years, she attended night school at Heald Business College of Hawaii and graduated with a Computer Applications Specialist Diploma, with Honors, 1½ years later. She then worked as a Document Processor for a court reporting firm in Honolulu for 2 years, processing subpoenas for worker's comp cases. Then Debbie and her family uprooted themselves from Hawaii to "experience" the mainland in June of 1998.

She worked in Logan as a Receptionist for a mortgage company and an Office Manager for a canning company before being hired by Utah State University. Debbie thoroughly enjoys working with the engineers and TOCs at the Quonset Hut.

Debbie salutes women who decide to go back to school after being out of circulation for a while. It can be done! She's living proof of it.

Video Network Specialist

Friend received his B.S. in Speech from USU and worked for 17 years in Friend "yes that's my name" Weller radio before coming to ITSE.

Jim Wellings
Technical Operations Center Engineer/Supervisor

Jim supervises the operations of the Ednet and Utah Education Jim "get that camera away from me" WellingsNetwork Satellite System (UENSS) Hub. Jim is the TOC supervisor and keeps all the operators on track, usually requiring the liberal application of whips and blunt instruments. Jim also installs and services remote satellite receive sites, and UEN Ednet site equipment as necessary. Other responsibilities include audio engineering for video productions and teleconferences, system design, and installation and maintenance.

Jim is a graduate of Utah State University with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism. Jim was the technical director and production coordinator for the Chase Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, and Taggart Student Center. He is a part owner of a pro sound and lighting company, Voyager Productions. With that company he has engineered live sound and designed lighting for many local and regional events, including sound and lighting design for USU's Glenn Miller show, The Festival of the American West, Logan City's Fourth of July Celebration, and the western US tour of Julie DeAzevedo. He has also engineered live sound for the western US tours of Greg Simpson, Michael Webb, and Kenneth Copes' My Servant Joseph. Jim has designed and installed sound systems including sound and intercom systems in the Ellen Eccles Theater, the USU Morgan Theater, and performance lighting and sound systems for the USU Taggart Student Center Ballroom and has engineered live and recorded music broadcasts for Utah Public Radio.

Jim's technical skills include live and studio audio engineering, multi track production, audio system design and installation, camera operation, video editing, and equipment installation. He is also webmaster for TSS and ITSE.

He is, by degree conferred from Utah State University qualified to say, "You want fries with that?"

Dale Willis
Systems Engineer

Dale is responsible for setting up and supporting the off-campus media Dale Willis and his patch panel enhanced classrooms. This includes support for off-campus wide area networks, phone connections, and problems with US West. Dale also assists in the set up, support and operation of a 240 port teleconference bridge used for the UENSS digital satellite system. Dale is the contact person for satellite site telephone, audio, and satellite problems. Dale has worked at USU in Distance Education for 15 years. He earned his bachelors of science degree in electrical engineering from USU.
