Recent analysis of skeletal remains dating to around 450 CE ("DNA shows malaria helped topple Rome" NY Times 2/20/2001) suggests that a virulent form of malaria was present in the vicinity of Rome in this day. Word of this pestilence, not the Pope, may be what, in fact, turned Attila away from Rome.
