Excommunication involves barring a person or persons from receiving the holy rites, such as baptism, last unction, confession, and so on. To die in a state of excommunication spells damnation, according to Catholic theology. Thus, it's one of a pope's greatest tools in enforcing conformity to orthodox practice.
