More than just a silly moment, this is a clear swipe at Euripides who had recently used the mechane to portray the mythological hero Bellerophon riding the winged horse Pegasus through the air. Euripides' bold use of this devise evidently inspired Aristophanes to spoof the tragic poet's daring scene and have his hero Trygaeus ride a giant dung-beetle through the air, instead of Pegasus.
