Immigration Update

Is your I-20 Expiring?

Go to the ISS Office immediately!

Look on item #5 of your I-20 to determine the date of expiration. If you require more time on your program than the expiration date allows, you must request an extension. You must request this extension in the 30-day period prior to the I-20 expiration date. If the I-20 has expired, see Mary at the ISS immediately.

Oh no, my Visa Expired!!

The U.S. visa is a document stamped or sealed in the passport. It is evidence that you have been approved to appear at the U.S. border for final review before entering the United States. The visa has an expired date which means that you may enter the country up to and including the that date. If you are in the country when the visa expires, there is no problem. However, if you want to return home and again reenter the United States, a new visa would be required from the U.S. Embassy in your home country. Visas cannot be renewed or extended in the United States.

Leaving the USA?

If you are planning to visit another country and then return to the United States, you must have your I-20 (F-1 visa holders) or IAP-66 (J-1 visa holders) signed in the ISS. Bring the I-20 or the IAP-66 and the following documents to the ISS: current registration, passport, I-95 card, and an unofficial transcript about one week prior to your planned departure.

Leaving the USA for a Visit...

Students leaving the U.S. who plan to return to USU within the next five months must go to the ISS two weeks before leaving. Arrive with unofficial transcript, current registration, passport, I-94, and I-20. There will be no I-20 signed unless this procedure is followed.

Working after Graduation...

Optional Pratical Training (OPT) is 12 months of INS--authorized employment to work in the USA in your major field of study. Requirements are:
  1. have a minimum of 9 months in legal status or
  2. 9 months in legal status since reinstatement,
  3. completed all course work or will complete the degree.
If you are interested in applying for OPT, you must attend workshops offered weekly at ISS on Thursdays at 3 pm. Take your unofficial transcripts and I-20s to these workshops. The applications for OPT are accepted 60 days prior to the completion and no later than 60 days following the completion. Some INS offices take six weeks to complete the authorizations procedure.

Selling Automobiles

If you are a student who is graduating and leaving Logan and are selling your car or leaving it for a friend to sell, sign the car title. Utah car titles no longer must be notarized.
