Dr. Openshaw received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Utah (1973); an M.S.W. in Clinical Social Work, with primary emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy, from the University of Utah (1976); and a Ph.D. in Family Studies, with major emphasis in Child Development and Family Relations, from Brigham Young University (1978).
Previous to Dr. Openshaw's appointment at Utah State University (1981), Dr. Openshaw was an Assistant Professor of Human Development, Family Relations and Community Educational Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. In 1979, Dr. Openshaw was asked to accept a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Human Development, Family Relations and Community Educational Services at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and as the Child and Family Life Specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
At the present, Dr. Openshaw is an Associate Professor of Family and Human Development, and Marriage and Family Therapy. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Openshaw was identified as the "Teacher of the Year" in the College of Family Life for the 1990-1991 and 1991-1992 academic years. Dr. Openshaw has also been honored by the University Mortar Board Society as a top professor. "Top Prof" (1987 and 1990) and the PINNACLE for his work with re-entry students at Utah State University.
Dr. Openshaw is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and Clinical Social Worker. He holds clinical membership and approved supervisory status in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and is a member of the state affiliate, the Utah Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Openshaw is a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis where he holds clinical and faculty status. He is past president of the Utah Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr. Openshaw is a member of the National Council on Family Relations, where he has served as Chair of the Family Therapy Section. He also is a member of the state affiliate, the Utah Council on Family Relations.
Dr. Openshaw has organized the Sex Offenses Research, Treatment and Social Policy team (SORT) and is a member of the Utah Network on Juveniles Offending Sexually. He is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and the Utah chapter of the organization.

Youthful Sexual Offending
- Theoretical and empirical conceptualization of youthful sex offenders, male and female.
- Program evaluation of treatment programs addressing youthful sexual offending.
Resiliency
- Identification and conceptualization of resiliency attributes.
- Resiliency factors associated with victims of sexual perpetration.
- Development, implementation and assessment of resiliency enhancement strategies.
Marriage and Family Therapy
- Development and assessment of intervention strategies (e.g., joining techniques, homework compliance methods, etc.).
- Therapeutic strategies oriented towards enhancing client motivation.
- Development and assessment of strategies oriented towards facilitating intimacy.
Personal Development Strategies
- Theoretical, conceptual and empirical clarification of personal development phenomena (e.g., self-esteem, self-discipline/motivation, success, hypnosis, etc.).
