ABOUT
GARTH AND MARIE JONES:
Garth
and Marie Jones traded life in sophisticated New York City for the
frontier community of Anchorage, Alaska. In 1973, Garth became the
founding dean of the School of Business and Public Policy, and Marie
the circulation librarian for the new University of Alaska.
Their
previous employment assignments for the United States government
have been in exotic Ponage in the Eastern Caroline Islands, Jogjakarta
on the Island of Java in Indonesia, the Muslim city of Lahore in
Pakistan, the lovely island of Oahu, and the sophisticated Chinese
university town of Mucha, Taiwan.
Garth's
first teaching assignment at the University of Utah gave way to
Pennsylvania State University, Brigham Young University, Colorado
State University, and the University of Southern California. He
developed programs at University of Gadja Mada, Indonesia, at the
University of Punjab in Pakistan, and the National Chengchi University
in Taiwan, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. The East West Center
in Honolulu gave him the opportunity to write.
Garth
and Marie are the proud parents of Dr. Drew L., a dentist (University
of Oregon Health Science Center); Dr. G. Kevin (SJD University of
Virginia School of Law); and Edward, who is a training officer of
the State of Alaska. Edward's wife, Susan, is an Anchorage elementary
school teacher. Granddaughter Dolly Sri and her husband Peter Douglas
Pixton graduated from BYU, class of '97, and grandson Matthew has
seen the light and is a graduate student in economics at Utah State
University.
Garth
has authored numerous books and article. His avocation is Mormon
history. Marie is an avid fisherman. Garth and Marie have established
a scholarship endowment fund in the Mountain West Center for Regional
Studies. Recipients of the Jones Family Scholarship are undergraduate
or graduate students majoring in the humanities or social sciences
(including economics) with a record of high academic achievement.
Students with backgrounds from rural Utah are given particular preference
for selection. Garth and Marie encourage recipients to contribute
the amounts they receive back to the scholarship endowment to benefit
future generations of students, but this is not a requirement. |
