The Heart of it All for Brass Ensemble (2003)
The Heart of It All is a tribute to the bicentennial of the State of Ohio. It is a brass fanfare based harmonically on the three-note chord produced from a suspended fourth. The resulting whole step is maximized through the use of ninth chords, and the projection of fourths is also a common structure. Finally, the ABA’ form is depictive of the word itself, “O-HI-O.”
I grew up and spent most of my adult life in Ohio. Several years ago, the marketing slogan (printed on my last license plate) was “The Heart of It All,” the title of this work. The inspiration is strictly personal for me, as a product and lover of the Midwest.
