The 2014 Application Deadline has Passed

Application Instructions and Guidance for NEH Summer Scholars

Before you attempt to complete an application you must read the eligibility requirements for NEH summer seminar participants. Please be sure that you have also read all the material on this website and the "Application Information and Instructions for NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes" on the NEH website.

Checklist of Application Materials:
A complete application requires the following:

1. The cover sheet: The application cover sheet must be filled out online at this address: https://securegrants.neh.gov/education/participants/
The cover sheet must be filled out online as directed by the prompts. When you are finished, be sure to click on the “submit” button. Save it as a PDF and send it to the seminar co-directors with your application. Additionally, print out the cover sheet for your records. At this point you will be asked if you want to fill out a cover sheet for another project. If you do, follow the prompts and select another project and then print out the cover sheet for that project. Note that filling out a cover sheet is not the same as applying, so there is no penalty for changing your mind and filling out cover sheets for several projects. A full application consists of the cover sheet plus the materials described below, which are to be sent directly to email address of seminar co-director, Sarah Blick. The directors will only accept electronic submissions.

2. The application consists of four parts:
1.     A PDF of the cover sheet.
2.     A detailed resume, curriculum vitae, or brief biography, not to exceed five pages in a PDF file.
3.     The names of two recommenders/referees along with contact information including phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
4.     An application essay as described below,
These are to be saved as a single pdf document named as: Surname_essay.pdf (for example, McKim_essay .pdf) and emailed to blicks@kenyon.edu.

Referees:
Referees should be familiar with the applicant's professional accomplishments or promise, teaching and/or research interests, and ability to contribute to and benefit from participation in the seminar. Referees should be provided with the directors' description of the seminar and the applicant's essay. Applicants who are current graduate students should include the name of a professor or advisor with whom they are currently working.

Please note: All application materials (including the NEH cover sheet which is completed online) should be converted to a single PDF document and sent electronically to the Seminar Directors at blicks@kenyon.edu by March 4, 2014.
Application materials sent to the Endowment will not be reviewed.

The Application Essay:

The most important part of your application is the essay that must be submitted as part of the complete application. This essay of no more than four double spaced pages should include your reasons for applying for this seminar; relevant personal and academic information, your qualifications to do the work of the seminar and make a contribution to it; what you hope to accomplish by participation, including a brief description of the research project that you will undertake, and the relation of participation in the seminar to your teaching. Applicants should be sure to discuss any independent study project that is proposed beyond the common work of the seminar.

Submission of Applications and Notification Procedure:

Completed applications should be submitted to the seminar application email address: blicks@kenyon.edu no later than March 4, 2014. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
