Social Security Information (How to Apply)

  1. Check in with OISS when you arrive and keep your visa status current. All students must be registered with OISS by providing evidence of identity with a current passport, visa, I-94 card, and I-20 or DS-2019 showing nonimmigrant status.

  2. Register for classes (at least 12 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits).

  3. Obtain an Employment Authorization Verification Letter from OISS.***
  4. Apply for on campus employment through the Student Employment office, TSC 106 (map). An F-1 student requesting a Social Security Number (SSN) for on-campus employment must prove he/she has an on-campus job and must show evidence of that employment or an SSN will be not be assigned.

  5. Get an employment verification letter from your USU campus employer (see sample).

    *** If you are a graduate student with an assistantship offer, you must do Step 5 first and bring the employer letter to the OISS before you get an Employment Authorization Verification Letter (Step 3).
  6. The student must provide a letter from the employer on the employer's letterhead that provides employment verification, namely:

    • Identity of student employee
    • Nature of job the student is, or will be, engaged in
    • Anticipated or actual employment start date
    • Number of hours the student is expected to work
    • Employer identification number (EIN)
    • Employer contact information, including the telephone number and the name of the F-1 student's immediate supervisor
    • Original signature and signatory's title
    • Date
  7. Take the letters to the Social Security Office

    • Original Employment Authorization Verification Letter (work letter) from OISS
    • Original Employer letter
    • Original I-20/DS-2019
    • Passport and visa
    • I-94 card
    • Tell Social Security you are student and request a receipt.
    • SOCIAL SECURITY REPRESENTATIVES WILL BE AT THE WORKFORCE SERVICES FROM 9:30 TO 2:00 P.M. ON EVERY THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH (LINK TO LOGAN LIBRARY CALENDER)
    • If you have any questions about how to list your address for your Social Security application (especially those campus housing resident halls), verify an accurate mailing address (see our website), or we strongly suggest you use our address for getting this important document:

If you need a receipt of application to SS before this time, you will need to apply directly to the nearest office in Ogden (see address on the right). Salt Lake Express (call 1-800-356-9796 or reserve on-line) or a friend or perhaps department colleague are your best options for transportation there.
