International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit

What is the IB?

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a nonprofit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. It offers high schools a comprehensive two year curriculum with internationally standardized exams that are recognized for college and university credit.

The IBO has a rigorous pre-university program preparing students for six subject area exams. It is a high level curriculum that encourages critical thinking by studying traditional disciplines from an international perspective.

Why do the IB?

  • IB has an international acceptability that allows for both flexibility and mobility.

  • IB provides a broad general education while still allowing students to study specialized subjects that they are interested in and want to pursue in the future.

  • IB emphasizes teaching students to learn how to learn and how to analyze.

  • IB encourages students to appreciate cultures and attitudes other than their own and to be informed, tolerant, and willing to communicate with others.

Transferring IB Credit

Utah State University recognizes the International Baccalaureate and its examinations. Our policy contains the following elements:

  • Students completing the IB diploma are awarded 30 semester hours of credit and receive a waiver for general education requirements—excluding the American Institutions, writing, and mathematics requirements necessary for graduation.

  • Students who have not completed the IB diploma receive 8 semester hours of credit for scores of 5, 6, or 7 achieved on the higher level exams up to a maximum of 30 semester credits.

  • No credit is awarded for standard level exams.
