When end-of-the-semester academic strain kicks in:
The Pressure Cooker

It's that time of year, when academic pressure is high and your student is in the throes of the "I only have a month before finals!" panic. Projects are coming due, final exams start in a few weeks, and many students are playing catch-up to prepare for the intense end of the semester.

There are plentiful support systems on campus to help students deal with academic pressure. Yet, nothing beats knowing that your family is rooting for you and wishing you the best. Here are a few ways you can help your student through this tough time:

  • offer words of support, not pressure
  • send encouraging emails or cards-nothing beats "real mail"
  • be understanding if your student isn't in as frequent contact for a few weeks
  • put together a care package (see suggestions)
  • let your student know that you're proud of him for who he is, not just what he achieves

What you do makes a difference!

The "Relieve the Pressure" Care Package

  • fun pens and pencils
  • tea, coffee or cocoa
  • a good book, CD or DVD (an "after studying" reward)
  • deodorant (students sometimes get so caught up in their studies that they don't get to the store)
  • healthy snacks like apple chips, dried fruit or trail mix
  • a funny photo of the family pet-or the family!
