Losing Lois is an inside look at the tragic loss of lesbian police officer Lois Marrero and the resulting legal and political questions raised by her life partner's bid for spousal pension benefits. Marrero was an officer for the Tampa, Florida Police Department. This short program follows the life of Mickie Mashburn, Marrero’s life partner, in the weeks following Marrero’s death. As Masbhurn—a fellow Tampa Police Officer—struggles with her grief, she must also shoulder the burdens of hostile media and an unsettling claim of infidelity by the partner she lost. The hurtful accounts of Marrero’s alleged “affair” become more difficult to take when Mashburn learns that Marrero’s own sister and mother are the source of these allegations. The police department that Mashburn serves and respects deals the final blow as the police pension board debates Mashburn’s rights to obtain her partner’s survivor benefits.
