My Left Breast
|
Gerry and
Peggy had just started work on their Bed and Breakfast when diagnosis of
Gerry’s malignant breast cancer came. Roger’s own documentation of the year
in which she underwent chemotherapy is personal filmmaking at its absolute
best – honest, inspiring and warmly funny.
She doesn’t hide the trauma and vulnerability caused by the harrowing changes to her life, and a body increasingly unrecognizable as her own. Yet, throughout this year, they never lose their sense of humor (Gerry delights in shocking her mother with her pot-smoking remedy), or the belief that they will indeed grow old together. As Gerry tells her lover: ‘after all this, I still think we’re lucky’. Unsurprisingly and deservedly, Roger’s My Left Breast, swept major documentary awards last year.
