Like her more famous namesake, Rev. Anita C. Hill is in the midst of a sex scandal, but unlike that earlier sordid tale of office hijinks, the basis of Rev. Hill's scandal is her committed, monogamous relationship with her spouse, Janelle. Officially, THIS obedience is billed as "the story of a woman, a congregation, and an issue that has divided the nation," but it's really the story of three women and their struggles with the conflict between faith and love. Janelle is not just part of Anita's background in this documentary, she is her partner in every sense of the word, by her lover's side as Anita challenges the ELCA's rule that requires homosexual ministers remain celibate but encourages their straight colleagues to marry and have families. This is also the story of Anita's friend Emily, who chose her lover over her calling to ministry. Emily represents the hopes of those Anita is fighting for, seeing in her friend, a wonderful, caring minister who is beloved by her entire flock, not just the GLBT, as exemplified in what she said to Fred Phelps during the sermon he protested outside her church, "God loves you, and I love you, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it." -Beth Westbrook
