Dr. Bruce Bugbee: Effective and Responsible Citation Analysis, Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 3:30 pm - Library 154
Citation metrics are being increasingly used by faculty to make their case for promotion. Because these data are easy to access on-line, they are also frequently used by reviewers to evaluate research accomplishments. Like any statistical procedure, citation metrics can be used and interpreted appropriately and inappropriately. This seminar will review common citation metrics (h-index, g-index, and variations) and discuss effective and responsible ways to use them to make a case for promotion. Given the variation among disciplines in citation metrics, the responsible intepretation of the data will also be discussed.
