The animation above is an accurate representation the Shock Generator used in Milgram's obedience experiments. The purpose of this animation is to give you a feel for how the "teachers" in Milgram's experiments performed. It's one thing to read about the experiment, but actually experiencing flipping the volt switches gives one a greater appreciation for just how obedient the "teachers" became. Remember - in the original experiment, no subject stopped before 300 volts!

Pretend that you are a "teacher" in the experiment and you have been instructed to administer the shocks from 15 to 450 volts each time the learner makes a mistake. The experimenter will tell you when the learner has made a mistake. Click each of the switches (from 15-450) in sequence to see what happens. The speaker above the Shock Generator will allow you to hear the response of the learner. The comments the "learner" makes are some of the actual scripted comments made during the original experiment.
