Dr. Stein is a clinical psychologist by training and is a full-time professor in the department. He also serves as the Program Chair for USU's statewide M.S. training program in Psychology-School Counseling. Dr. Stein's major research interests focus on the range of so-called addictive behaviors and impulse control problems (e.g., substance abuse, pathological gambling, and eating disorders). Most of his research has sought to identifying risk factors, valid assessment procedures, and evaluations of interventions for eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa). His research grants have been primarily associated with the federal government's Drug Free Schools and Communities Program, primarily in the arena of prevention. He has also developed a wide range of training contracts and grants for the department's Ph.D. program in Combined Clinical/Counseling/School Psychology.
Dr. Stein's administrative duties limit his involvement in teaching; however, he regularly mentors M.S. and Ph.D. students' research each year and offers courses within the graduate program of the department i.e., 7270 Psychopathology, 6810 Psychology of Addictive Behaviors and support courses for the M.S. program in Psychology-School Counseling. Dr. Stein is actively involved in the Utah Center for Addictions research program advisory committee (University of Utah) and the Utah Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Service, Salt Lake City.
