Utah State University’s Department of Psychology offers a master’s-level program of study in Psychology which qualifies graduates for professional licensure in School Guidance Counseling.  The program is specifically designed to train individuals for school counseling positions in grades K-12 within public and private schools in elementary, middle, and high school settings. Training is provided in the design and implementation of school-based counseling and comprehensive guidance programs. Specific coursework is formulated to train students in a range of skills including: individual and group counseling for diverse populations, behavior and educational assessment and intervention, research and methodological foundations, career development, and ethical, legal and professional standards.  Experiential learning in the form of practicum and internship placements in private and public school settings is a critical component of the School Counselor Education program. The program is a candidate member in good standing of the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), and is approved by the Utah State Office of Education and most other states.

The Professional School Counselor Education Program is a part-time evening program co-sponsored by the Departments of Psychology and Distance Education.  Students are accepted into the Statewide Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC) program in odd-numbered years and into a cohort which meets in Davis County (located north of Salt Lake City) with live instructorship in even-numbered years. Students admitted to the (IVC) program take classes which originate on the campus of USU and are then broadcast live, one evening per week, to 10 sites located throughout the state of Utah. Students admitted to the statewide and the live-instructorship programs take two 3-credit hour classes each semester, one evening per week for 2 years, including summers. A 600-clock-hour internship follows. This part-time schedule allows students to fulfill family and professional commitments while they are enrolled in the program
