Every Tuesday, the digital music service Spotify highlights new artists and songs. Appropriately dubbed New Music Tuesday, this list includes many different genres and artists that have gained some public notoriety. The list includes music from Classic Rock to Rap and even includes Country. Spotify truly touches on all facets of new music and allows there to be a wider audience for new music. This week the obvious trend throughout the list was toward female singers. While the majority of successful musicians have always been of the male persuasion, it’s a refreshing change to hear an insurgence of female voices, especially in the indie genres. Artists such as Fifth Harmony, CHVRCHES, Ella Eyre, and Pr0files show us that this new wave of female artists have staked claim beyond mere placeholders in any genre. With the onset of the mixed backtracks and electronic musicality that has become very popular in our lifetime, a continual stream of artists are able to enter the music scene with more ease than previously allowed. Subsequently allowing more female artists into the industry.

Spotify produces an even balance of new faces in the music scene as well as highlighting more widely known artists producing new sounds. New artists such as Osca, a London-based band that has recently been garnering attention for their new single, “Blood,” and CHVRCHES, who’s single “Dead Air” is featured in the new Hunger Games movie, made the list alongside those who’ve already staked their claim in the music industry. Calvin Harris, who could be considered the Scottish version of David Guetta, made the list twice, featuring two different female singers to highlight his arrangements. Harris is right alongside other more established artists such as Mat Kearney, The Decemberists, and Angels and Airwaves, all of which have had several successful albums previously.

Spotify even brings in more classically known artists highlighting a new song each from Wu-Tang Clan, Foo Fighters, and Pink Floyd. All of these fail to disappoint and help to bridge the generation gap in new music. Pink Floyd’s “Allons-y” is from what is publicized as the band’s final album The Endless River. Now while Pink Floyd often is synonymous with the surname Waters, fans need to realize that Roger Waters was not involved with this new and final album due to the fact that he left the band 29 years ago. Despite Waters’ absence, the largely instrumental album is well worth a listen. Foo Fighter’s “Congregation” off of their eighth album scheduled for release on November 10th, once again delivers classic Foo Fighters sound but with new energy. While the band is touring internationally, we can only hope that a Salt Lake show will be forthcoming.

Make sure to check out New Music Tuesdays every week on Spotify. It’s a great way to see up and coming artists and new music from long time favorites.
