This FAQ is designed to help students with common questions
that may come up in the course of their experience with
the
Rhetoric Associates program. If there are any other questions
that you have, or items that you feel need to be added to
the
list, please email Julie Foust, and it will be taken care of.
What is a Rhetoric Associate?
Students are nominated annually by faculty for their outstanding
writing abilities. They are then trained during a quarter-long
seminar that focuses on teaching RAs how to tutor their peers.
How do I get help from an RA?
Rhetoric Associates are available for help in classes whose
instructors have requested their assistance.
How does it work?
Once you have handed in your paper, your RA will review it.
Then, RAs pass around conference sign-up sheets for you to
choose a time that works with your schedule. You then meet
your RA in the place designated on his/her introduction sheet
for a 20-30 minute conference. These conferences should answer
any questions you may have about your paper, and also give
an opportunity for your RA to comment on your paper.
What do I need to bring to the conference?
In addition to yourself, it is an excellent idea to bring
a list of questions/concerns you may have regarding the assignment.
What if I'm interested in becoming an RA?
If you are interested in becoming an RA, you simply need
to fill out this on-line application form and submit to
the program
director, Julie Foust. That's all there is to it.
Are RAs volunteers?
Rhetoric Associates receive a $525 stipend for their services
per quarter. This entails reading and commenting on papers,
attending meetings, and counseling twice with approximately
fifteen students over the course of the quarter.
How do I request RA assistance in my class, and how do I
