Returning From a Leave of Absence

We are pleased to welcome you back to Utah State University from your leave of absence! Below are the steps you will need to take to prepare for your return.

Getting Started

  • First, you do not need to apply for readmission to USU. Because you took the initiative to file an official Leave of Absence before you left, you are still admitted, and you do not need to complete additional paperwork.
  • In order for us to monitor your return to USU, a hold was placed on your registration, and you will need to have this hold removed prior to your registration for classes.

    Remove your hold by phone
Call Lisa or Brian at 435-797-1132, or Krystin at 435-797-0977

    Remove your hold by e-mail
E-mail Krystin at krystin.deschamps@usu.edu. Please verify your local and permanent addresses, as well as verify that you are returning.

Academic Advising

  • Next, you should contact your academic advisor for advice regarding the classes for which you should register. If you do not remember your advisor's name, please refer to the following University Advising link: http://www.usu.edu/advising/advisors/. Advisors are listed by major, and their telephone numbers and e-mail addresses are provided.

Registration

Registration for Fall Semester is in mid-November, Summer Semester is in early April, and Spring Semester is in mid-April. Check this Web site for exact dates: http://www.usu.edu/registrar/dates/

  • After completing the above steps, you are ready to register.
  • Please check ACCESS to determine which day you can register during fall and spring "priority registration" week (generally, graduate students register on Monday, seniors on Tuesday, juniors on Wednesday, etc.).
  • You may register electronically via ACCESS (www.usu.edu/registrar/ACCESS/index.cfm ).

Financial Aid and Scholarships

  • If you had a scholarship, it was placed on hold as part of your Leave of Absence, and will be reactivated automatically as part of your return.

Please note that if you are returning in a semester OTHER than the semester you originally started, you should contact the USU Scholarship Manager, Patti Kohler, to let her know. Her phone number is: 435-797-8847.

  • For other questions regarding financial aid or a scholarship, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 435-797-0173 or http://www.usu.edu/finaid/.

Housing

  • If you are interested in USU on-campus housing, please contact our Housing Office at 435-797-3113, or visit their Web site at: http://www.housing.usu.edu/.

Update on Mathematics at USU

  • USU now offers a refresher course in mathematics, called Math 0920 Math Skills Review. This course is designed for students who need to enroll in mathematics courses starting with Math 0900 Elements of Algebra and continuing through Math 1210 Calculus I and Math 1220 Calculus II, but who, due to a leave of absence, may need a brief refresher or prerequisite math skills. Math 0920 Math Skills Review will be offered at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.

The course will not be offered for credit, and students will be charged a fee of $100. This fee includes the fee for taking the Math Placement Test after attending Math 0920. In addition, if a student has taken the Math Placement Test and enrolls in Math 0920, $10 of the fee for Math 0920 will be waived. For more information, check out the Math Web site at: http://www.math.usu.edu//index.php?program=ugr&subprog=ref , or contact the Math Advising Office in Lund 201. You may reach the advising office by phone or e-mail at: Linda.Skabelund@usu.edu, 435-797-0268.

Foreign Language

  • If you learned a foreign language while on your leave of absence, or if you already know one, you may be eligible to earn up to 16 academic credits by taking a language exam. The credits are inexpensive - usually $100 for all 16 - and your language would be posted to your academic transcript. Please see the Languages Department Web site for a more detailed explanation: http://lpsc.usu.edu/default.asp?id=238

Parents

  • We thank you for assisting in your son's or daughter's return to USU. Ideally, your student filed a Release of Information form, which allows university officials to share information with you about that student's record. Please know that without this form, by federal privacy laws, we cannot share anything other than "directory information" (name, address, major, class rank). HOWEVER, if you claim your son or daughter as a dependent on your federal income taxes, then you may file a Release of Information form, which would grant you access to complete information. Please see this site for more details: http://www.usu.edu/registrar/ferpa/.

Again, welcome back to Utah State University! We are very pleased to have you back. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions you may have.
