Fostering Student Success
Adrianne Moore, Assistant Professor, Department of Theatre Arts

The Department of Theatre Arts supports a number of initiatives which contribute to the success of our students and, in particular, to the success of our freshmen.

The Theatre Student Association (TSA), supported by the department, organizes social events with the aim of helping new students to get to know each other better and more quickly become a part of the Theatre Arts Department family. Freshmen receive mentoring from juniors and seniors. The TSA also stages independent productions directed by students. These productions present a range of opportunities for students outside of our regular production season. Most freshmen find themselves fully engaged in the department almost as soon as they arrive. They are cast in our main stage shows, as well as in student-directed shows, and also act in scenes for the directing classes. Students having an interest in technology and design can participate in productions during their first semester at USU.

We hold a meeting every semester for all majors and minors to introduce new students and update students on curriculum, production, and other departmental matters.

Every student is assigned a faculty advisor who is working professionally in his or her area of emphasis.  The ratio of faculty to students is about one to eight, so students are known by their teachers and have the benefit of individual instruction and attention.

Faculty are active in assisting students who are preparing for admission into graduate programs. Acting students are coached on their audition material and design students receive guidance in compiling and presenting design portfolios.

Faculty members also assist students in their preparation for the American College Theatre Festival, which hosts competitions for actors and designers, as well as the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, where students compete for jobs and internships.  For more information, contact the Theatre Arts Department at (435) 797-3046.
