Tracking Students for Success
Robert Peterson, USU Uintah Basin Campus

The Uintah Basin Campus recently implemented a new student tracking system. When a student walks through the doors of the Uintah Basin Campus in either Roosevelt or Vernal, the registration staff immediately gathers information about the student’s educational needs. This Excel database helps to ensure that the registration staff collects and provides information to students that will aid them in their educational goals.

Follow-up done by the registration staff for potential students often eliminates the confusion and fear that students may feel during their application for admission or financial aid. Some who may call or stop into the office, for information-gathering purposes only, are also recorded for future follow-up. As the next semester approaches, efforts are made to minimize any obstacle that may stand in the way of a new or returning student.

After assistance is rendered by the registration staff, students are then forwarded to an advisor who also tracks progress on a separate Excel database. Degree interest, admission status, and other student service needs are monitored. When students enroll in classes, they are placed on inactive status until the next semester. Students requiring more attention will be focused on and assisted for future enrollment.

As these records evolve the Uintah Basin Campus staff should be able to do more to identify students not enrolled and to take the necessary steps to help them achieve success.
