Beaver Creek Lodge
The Logan SBDC, located at Utah State University, worked
at the beginning with Bryan and Jim Lundahl on the feasibility
of building Beaver Creek Lodge, located on 45 acres they
own at Stump Hollow in Logan Canyon. They already provided
equestrian services. The banks needed a feasibility study
for the $350,000 loan to build the lodge. We drew on the
resources of a student, Judd Taylor, and provided the
following:

Modest Design Modifications – Hot Tub
Research included a survey of 40 individuals recreating
in Logan Canyon, with 71% preferring a remote area, similar
to Swamp Hollow, for lodging; Identifying current publications
that noted the appeal of the area for snowmobiles; numerous
letters of support from the owner of Beaver Mountain Ski
Resort, Cache Economic Development, Cache County Corporation,
Ideal Beach Master Association, State of Utah Department
of Natural Resources, Cache Chamber of Commerce, Bear Lake
Regional Commission and the reasons for their support.
Each of these areas also provided research information
on travel, recreation, and lodging for this area. We also
suggested that they add Hot Tubs, as people relaxing from
a day’s activities would appreciate that luxury.
We also looked at similar lodges, such as Timpanogas Lodge
in Provo Canyon, and Associations.
The Lodge is operating successfully; it provides 11 rooms,
equestrian activities, snowmobile rentals, and lodging
that meet several tourist needs for winter, spring, summer,
and fall. They currently have 5 full time and 6 part time
employees, counting the owners, Bryan and Helen Lundahl.
Helen states, “the business is going very well. Snowmobile
rentals have increased 400% since we began; we are usually
near capacity during peak seasons, with off seasons being
about 40%. We found the SBDC’s research, reports,
and projections extremely helpful; the bank was very impressed
with the marketing information, which played a critical
role in our ability to obtain the loan.” (The owners
have made another success story.)
