Farewell Reception Honoring Sue Morgan, USU Geology Department Faculty Member

When: Nov 14, 2009 6:00:00 PM

Description: The public is invited to an Open House to celebrate the many community contributions of USU Geology Department lecturer Sue Morgan and to wish her well on her next adventure: she is moving to Alaska. Light refreshments will be provided.

Sue Morgan came to Logan in 1983 and has been educating and giving back to the community ever since. Countless people have been in her classes at Utah State University, learning about Geology and having fun in the process. In recent years, Sue is perhaps best known as Cache Valley's only successful Iditarod competitor - she completed the grueling 1100 mile solo sled-dog race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska in March 2008. This December, Sue returns to Alaska permanently, to begin the next chapter of her adventurous life.

Location: Cache Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 596 North 900 East, Logan

Physics Colloquium: Emma Smith, teacher, Box Elder High School, Utah, and USU physics graduate student

When: Nov 17, 2009 3:30:00 PM

Description: Emma Smith, a physics teacher at Box Elder High School and graduate student in secondary education at USU, presents "Physics for All." Her talk is preceded at 3 p.m. by refreshments.

In 1997, Physics became the start of disciplinary science study for incoming sophomores at Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah. The decision to reverse the traditional sequencing of the sciences (Biology followed by Chemistry and then Physics) stemmed from a department's desire to make science more accessible to students through the realization the design of physics ultimately leading to biology represented the natural progression of the sciences. The culture of the Physics classroom was now vastly different with upwards of three hundred students now enrolling annually in Physics. In response to a greater number of students with learning disabilities undertaking a Physics course, Emma Smith developed a curriculum enhancement package "ADDventures in Physics" with an award from the American Institute of Physics to address this concern. In 2001, Box Elder High School was one of the fifty-eight schools studied in Nobel Laureate Leon Lederman's Project ARISE (American Renaissance in Science Education) which advocates for more coherent high school science programs through the implementation of a Physics for All approach.
Emma Smith will share experiences of the past twelve years which shaped her to be a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching recipient and Utah’s 2006 Outstanding Physics Teacher of the Year. Student perspectives and insights will be shared in addition to pitfalls contrasted with the benefits Physics for All.

Location: SER 244

When: Nov 24, 2009 3:30:00 PM

Description: Physics faculty members James Coburn and Shane Larson present "Under the Dome: Taking an Inside Look at the Rebirth of Astronomy at USU." Refreshments at 3 p.m. precede the talk.

During the summer of 2009, a new observatory was constructed on the roof of USU's SER building. Soon to be outfitted with a 20" reflecting telescope, the new USU Observatory (USUO) will replace the aging facility near Romney Stadium. This new facility will have a diverse mission to serve students taking astronomy courses, reach out to the public in order to raise awareness of science and physics through astronomical programs, and provide a diverse suite of research opportunities in astronomy and astrophysics. In this talk, we'll spend some time reviewing the history of astronomy at USU, take a look at teh development and construction of the USUO, and finally look at several vignettes of projects that are planning for the observatory once the primary telescope arrives.

Location: SER 244
