Boots

scuba boots

Boots are pretty simple. Most come with zippers, while some don't. Get a pair that's at least 5mm thick if you'll be diving in cold water. Fit is also important here: you don't want your boots to have so much empty space in them that water floods them and sloshes around. Sizing often runs a little smaller than shoe sizes, so be sure to try them on before making a purchase. Retail boot prices are around $30-$60.

Gloves

scuba gloves

Gloves are important if you're diving in cold water. Divers' hands often get chilled before the rest of their body, and you want to maintain as much feeling and dexterity as possible while diving in case you ever need it, such as a rescue situation, etc. While 3mm may work in cold water, 5mm would be warmer (but the extra bulk may compromise dexterity). Get a pair that fits well, with no empty space. Some divers wear thin "reef" gloves even in warm water, to protect from scrapes and stinging critters. Retail prices on gloves are anywhere from $15 to over $60.
