Leave of Absence & Deferment
LOA Long Term Return- PARENT
If you have a current USU student who is returning from a Leave of Absence refer to the following checklist for ways you can assist them as they return.
Ideally, your student set their security phrase and identified you as a delegate before they left. Designation as a student’s delegate will give you permission to make changes and act in your student’s behalf while they are on deferment.
If your student has not yet given you permission, they should go to myid.usu.edu, choose the Account Delegates option, and add your name and birthdate. You will remain as a delegate on their account until they remove that access.
UPDATE LEAVE OF ABSENCE
If your student’s plans change and they will be returning sooner or later than was indicated on their Leave of Absence request, you or your student should contact the Leave of Absence Department at 435-797-1132 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
CONTACT ACADEMIC ADVISOR
Refer to the class suggestions made by your student and their advisor before they left, or contact the student's academic advisor to find out which classes your student should register for.
You can find the advisor for your major by visiting advising.usu.edu.
REGISTER FOR CLASSES
If your student has been gone more than six months reset the student's secure password at myid.usu.edu
Registration for Summer semester is in early April, Fall semester is in Mid-April, and Spring semester is in Mid-November. If your student will not be home in time for priority registration, follow the step-by-step process of how to register demonstrated here (http://www.usu.edu/registrar/htm/tutorials) to help them get into the classes indicated by their advisor.
If you will be helping your student register for classes while they are gone, go here for registration tutorials that will help you navigate through USU's registration system.
NOTE FINANCIAL INFORMATION
Activate Scholarships. If your student was awarded USU scholarships and submitted a Leave of Absence request at www.usu.edu/loa, these scholarships will automatically be put on hold and reactivate upon their return.
If your student has been awarded departmental or private endowment scholarships they will need to contact the department/donor directly to put these specific scholarships on hold.
- Plan Ahead for Financial Aid. The time your student should apply for financial aid is dependent upon when they will be returning to USU. The application for financial aid begins in January for the following academic year, and must be applied for annually. Therefore, if your student will begin school in August they should apply in January prior to starting school. The free online application can be found at: https://fafsa.ed.gov . This application requires tax information but can serve as a great resource to help your student pay for college.
- If you have student loans they will need to contact their service provider directly to make sure you know the status of their loan. Most loan service providers can be found by completing the log-in at https://nslds.ed.gov . If your student has a Perkins Loan the service provider is Justin Gereau located on USU campus, and you or your student may contact him at (435) 797-1057 or email@example.com.
For more information about Financial Aid contact the USU Financial Aid office at (435) 797-0173 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
REMEMBER TUITION PAYMENTS
Make sure that your student’s tuition and fees are paid by the deadline found at www.usu.edu/tuition for the semester they will return.
On-Campus housing is a great place for your student’s return to college. Living on campus can help them adjust to college life in a social atmosphere while giving them easy access to the resources they will need. For more information and to print off a housing application visit www.usu.edu/housing , or contact housing at (800) 863-1085, and email@example.com

Language Testing- If your student learned a foreign language while on their leave of absence, they may be eligible to earn up to 16 academic credits by taking a language exam.
