The Sonora Mexico Service Project is fast becoming a tradition for the USU Spanish Club. The first project was completed in 2002, during the winter olympics. This year will mark the third sucessful project. The project is made possible by the dedication of students, the generosity of sponsors and the helpfulness of La Fundación de Ayuda Infantil (FAI).

The Service Project takes places in Ciudad Obregon in Sonora Mexico. Sonora is the Mexican State, capitol Hermosillo, just south of Arizona. The FAI organization is headquartered in Ciudad Obregon. Ciudad Obregon has a population similar to Logan’s. The climate in Sonora is hot and dry during the summer and rather cold during the winter months.

The FAI Organization is a branch of Save the Children Mexico. They play a key role in making the project a success while the students are working in Sonora and they continue to work while the club is back in Utah. They are the true champions working to make their community a better place.

Houses like this (above) are replaced with Adobe Houses (Below)

Making adobe bricks can be hard work, but when you have a bunch of the neighborhood children help it can be tons of fun.

It takes about 1,200 large adobe bricks to make a small snug house. And at $500-800 for materials it is a small price to pay for a huge improvements in living conditions.

The Spanish Club works with professionals that really know how to make good solid bricks that are used to build homes.

Juan and Chad mix adobe mud and Michelle shows off the week's work
Scott helps as the walls go up

The final results after many hours of hard work and after the generous donations is a beautiful new adobe house, complete with bath, dual bedrooms and living space; not to mention a wonderful blue paint job finished by volunteers from the USU Spanish Club.

Families need your help. For a small amont of people a family can build a new adobe home. Ask yourself if you can spare a little money to change someone's life forever. To make a donation to the Sonora Mexico Service Project scroll down and follow the instructions. Thank you for your support!
