John
Allen, ( Ph.D. Washington State University) Professor of Sociology. His areas of teaching and research include rural sociology, survey methods, community response to change, community and economic development, applied sociology and natural resource management/environmental sociology.
Currently he is engaged in research using network analysis to understand how community structure influences community response to rapid energy development and the environmental conflict that often develops due to rapid change. He is also continuing his research in the role of community in supporting entrepreneurship in rural places.
He was Director of the Western Rural Development Center hosted by Utah State University from 2004-2008 and before joining the faculty at Utah State University was a professor of Rural Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he was also Director of the Center for Applied Rural Innovation and Executive Director of the Nebraska Cooperative Development Center. Earlier in his career he was also an assistant professor and Assistant Dept. Head at the University of New England ( Maine) in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
In addition to teaching and conducting research he continues to work with his old horse and donkey and find time to fly fish and camp in the great western mountains.
