Sean
Elias, (Ph.D. Texas A & M University), Visiting Assistant Professor, recently completed his dissertation, "Black and White Sociology: Segregation of the Discipline," a thesis that challenges the dominant narratives of the history of sociology and current mainstream sociological frameworks, which are largely grounded by a 'white sociological frame' of ideas and practices. His interests and research foci are race/ethnicity, sociological theory, and historical, political and cultural sociology, particularly in the areas of African American studies, elites and power, human rights, and the history and sociology of sociology.
Recent publications include: "Racial Discrimination: Origins and Patterns," Oxford Encyclopedia of Human Rights (New York: Oxford University Press, 2009); "Social Justice and Critical Public Sociology," with Joe Feagin and Jennifer Mueller, Handbook of Public Sociology (Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield, 2009); "Investigating the Aspen Elite," Contexts 7(4).
Forthcoming publications: "W.E.B. DuBois, Race, and Human Rights, Societies Without Borders: Special Issue Race and Human Rights: Critical Histories, Inquiries, and Futures; and "Comment to Michael Omi and Howard Winant," Contemporary Sociology.
Vita for Dr. Elias
