Dr.
Susan Dawson is a professor of social work who has been
at USU since 1988. She teaches courses in the area of public social
policy, with her primary research interest in occupational and environmental
health. For more than fifteen years she has studied the psychosocial impacts
of uranium mining and milling on the people of the Colorado Plateau.
She has worked extensively with Navajo/Diné uranium workers and
their families and other American Indian peoples, including the Acoma,
Hopi, and Laguna. In addition, Dr. Dawson's research has impacted the
social policy arena at the legislative level, involving the Radiation
Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) of 1990 and the Amendments of 2000. At present, she is studying network structures that relate to rapid energy development in the Southwest.
