APPLICATIONS
AND FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE
Applying for Admission and Financial Aid
Applicants to the masters’ and doctoral programs in Sociology
will need to send a complete application package to the School of Graduate
Studies at Utah State University. A checklist of application materials
can be seen here.
Information about application requirements and copies of the application
forms are available on the SGS website at: http://www.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply.
The SGS will forward on your application to the department when it is
complete. The department makes a recommendation to the SGS about admission,
and the Dean of Graduate Studies makes final decisions regarding admissions.
Applications should include a letter of intent from the student that
outlines their reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in Sociology,
and a description of the particular specialty areas or subject matter
they seek to emphasize in their graduate work. We understand that interests
can and do change once you are here, but encourage applicants to clearly
describe the issues in Sociology that excite them. While this letter
should accompany your application to the School of Graduate Studies,
we ask that a copy of this letter should be sent to the department at
the following address:

For students planning to start graduate school in the fall semester,
we strongly encourage applicants to get a completed admissions package
to the School of Graduate Studies before February 1
to allow full consideration for financial assistance awards.

financial assistance is available at: http://www.usu.edu/graduateschool/financial/
Graduate Assistantships
The Graduate Program in Sociology awards teaching and research assistantships
to entering and continuing graduate students through a merit-based competitive
process. Master’s-level students with assistantships qualify for
a waiver of the out-of-state portion of their tuition. Doctoral-level
students with assistantships earn a tuition-remission. While assistantships
are usually awarded for the 8-month academic year, there are often research
and teaching opportunities for graduate students during the summer as
well.
Graduate Fellowships
The Sociology Graduate Program awards a number of graduate fellowships
annually. These include the: Wade and Kathryn Andrews Fellowship, Calvin
and Janet Maurer Fellowship; Edward O. Moe Fellowship, Lowry Nelson
Fellowship, and Joseph Geddes Fellowship [Rural Sociology]; Carmen Frederickson
Fellowship [Sociology of Gender], R. Welling Roskelley Fellowship [International
Development], and Yun and Wendy Kim Fellowship [Population and Development].
Departmental Fellowship awards are made on a competitive basis depending
on student background, interests, and accomplishments.
In addition, the School of Graduate Studies at Utah State University
awards several prestigious fellowships to incoming graduate students.
They include the President’s Fellowship, the Graduate School Fellowships,
and the Vice President for Research Fellowship. These awards are made
based primarily on GRE scores, transcripts, and letters of reference.
