SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM

SOCIOLOGY MISSION STATEMENT

The Sociology program’s guiding philosophy is based on two broad traditions: (1) the social scientific tradition underlying sociology and (2) the land-grant university heritage. In accordance with these traditions, the program mission is to prepare students to work in a diverse society and to equip students with the knowledge and skills essential to success in institutions such as education, health, government, social welfare, housing, criminal justice, marketing, and research.

The mission can be more succinctly stated as

1. To prepare students as citizens through education in a curriculum of liberal arts and sciences education coursework and

2. To prepare students for advanced education as well as responsible citizenship in the areas of service and research.

This is accomplished via our goal and outcome expectations:

Goals

1. Communicate effectively about society and social issues

2. Think critically, analytically, and logically about social issues and social problems.

3. Understand and use sociological principles, concepts, and theories to examine social behavior and issues.

4. Understand and evaluate the application of sociological methods to social behavior and issues.
