USU requires that students have adequate medical insurance coverage while abroad. Students participating on USU faculty-led programs generally have an insurance policy included in the program fee. With all kinds of study abroad programs, students should evaluate their own insurance needs and consider their options carefully.

In general, a specific study abroad insurance policy will cover students only out of the US . Should a student need to return home in the middle of their program, no coverage would be provided under a study abroad policy. If a student needs to access medical services abroad, he/she should retain all receipts. Usually, services must be paid for upfront, and reimbursement will occur when the student provides the proper documentation to the insurance company.

Students on USU programs are required to have medical evacuation and repatriation of remains coverage. In other words, in case of sickness or death, one can be returned to one's own country, to receive needed medical attention. If a student is covered under a family policy, and would like to use it abroad, contact the insurance company to determine if the policy will cover the student in the country (ies) abroad where he/she will be living or traveling. Often policies will not automatically provide evacuation or repatriation coverage. It may be necessary to add a rider to the policy, purchase a study abroad insurance policy or the ISIC card, to obtain this coverage.

In addition to the ISIC card which can be purchased at USU Office of Study Abroad, there are other companies that provide health insurance coverage at a reasonable cost to those living or traveling abroad.
