Kick Drugs Out of Cache Valley Tournament ...

Kick Drugs Out of Cache Valley Tournament (KDOCVT) is a local martial arts Tournament sponsored by the Cache Valley Black Belts, to raise money to help fight Drug Abuse in Cache Valley. All proceeds of the Tournament go to help support organizations that help prevent Drug Abuse. Past reciepients include DaySpring, DARE, and U.S.U.'s Drug Prevention organization. KDOCVT has been held each spring in the Logan Receration Center for the last 5 years. KDOCVT is a true Open Martial Arts Tournament allowing people to enter from all different styles without a bias for any one particular style, as the judges come from all the local Cache Valley Martial Art Schools. And the rules are formed by consensus from all the Black Belts at the different schools. The U.S.U. Tae Kwon Do club has been proud to help out and participate in this tournament.

Next years tournament will be held Saturday April 26, 1997 in the Logan Rec. Center by Logan High. There will be divisions for: Kata (forms), Kumite (Sparring) , Self Defense (pre-set drill defending against kick, punch, and grab), and Weapons (forms). There will be adult, young-adult, and children age divisions. As well as seperate men and women categories. Eliminations start at 10:00 am and finals are at 6:00 pm. It promises to be an exciting tournament with fun had by all. Come out and join us.

Scoring Sparring
The tournament has targets as head, chest, and groin. Attacks to joints, back or neck are not allowed. Sweeps are allowed, if done gently so as not to injure opponent (in other words you can't just drop him to the floor, you've got to guide him down). However, sweeps do not score points, only a follow up technique within the next 3 seconds. There should be no contact to face or groin, some contact to chest is allowed. Going out of the ring, brings a warning, after 3 times each exit gives a penalty point to partner. Safety gear: mouthguard, cup, head-gear (optional at Black belt level), foot and hand gear, is required. Match is point sparring best out of five. Match stops after a point is scored (called by one of the judges).

For questions on the tournament, contact the USU Tae Kwon Do club. They can either answer your question or get you in contact with Lynn Myers, Gary Connors, Pat Smith, Ron Simms, Shane Gordan, Herb Patagemous (spell?), Brent Unjhem (spell?) or one of the other Cache Valley black belts putting the tournament together.
