LOGAN, UT – No one takes divorce lightly, but people often go through with it without considering all the implications. For this reason, Utah State University Extension has designed a free, online divorce orientation course available at

According to Brian Higginbotham, USU Extension family and human development specialist, the program was designed to be a resource for individuals who may be thinking about divorce. These individuals are at the crossroads of divorce, facing a challenging decision that has consequences for the future of their own lives and the lives of family members.

“The course is free and completely anonymous,” said Higginbotham. “You go through the lessons at your own pace, either online, or you can download the entire text of the workbook. The online version has the enhanced features of voice-over PowerPoint presentations and video dramatizations corresponding with each of the eight lessons.”

He said lesson topics include the financial implications of divorce, legal options, consequences for children and options for repairing the marriage if you choose not to divorce. The online course is based on the popular workbook, “Should I Keep Trying to Work It Out: A Guidebook for Individuals and Couples at the Crossroads of Divorce (And Before),” written by  Alan Hawkins, chair of the Utah Commission on Marriage and Tamara Fackrell, a Utah attorney mediator.
