Lauren Sevian joins Utah State University’s jazz students for a memorable performance in “Big Bands” Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p. m. at the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.
“Lauren Sevian is one of the top saxophone players in New York City, and this is a great experience for the students to learn from a professional musician,” said Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies in the Caine College of the Arts.
Sevian has performed since she was 12 years old, first on the piano and then the saxophone. She attended the Manhattan School of Music, graduating with her bachelor’s of music in 2001. In 2003 Sevian became a member of the Mingus Big Band, winning a Grammy award in 2011 for its album “Live at the Jazz Standard.”
“This performance with Sevian will help bring students up to speed with the professional world of music,” said Sam Wright, string bass in the jazz orchestra and a senior majoring in music education. “She has high expectations for us and we aim to meet them.”
The concert will feature USU’s Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Orchestra performing pieces that include Moanin’ by Charles Mingus and Walking Shoes by Gerry Mulligan.
“This concert is going to have a lot of energy to it,” said Colin Jensen, a senior majoring in music education and a drummer in the jazz ensemble. “Jazz music tends to fill the room with its richly-layered sound and feeling.”
Tickets for “Big Band” are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and youth, $5 faculty and staff and free for USU students with valid ID.
